Samsung has announced the next generation of expandable storage cards called Universal Flash Storage (UFS).

Based on the JEDEC Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 1.0 Card Extension Standard, their new line of UFS card have read speeds five times faster than top of the line MicroSD cards currently available on the market. The card is capable of reading data at 530 megabytes per second (530 MB/s), which means a 5GB film can be downloaded from the card in just 10 seconds, as compared to 50 seconds from a UHS-1 card.

Sequential write speeds have also significantly increased, hitting 170MB/s, which is close to double that of today’s MicroSD alternatives.

These increased speeds means much better performance for those who pulls extremely large amounts of data from storage devices, especially those who view high quality movies and other videos.

I was excited at first until I read this -

Given the differing design on the back, UFS cards won’t be backward compatible with today’s traditional devices. It’s pretty safe to say Samsung will launch these new cards along with their next line up of smartphones and cameras before other manufacturers.
