Diablo 3 Review 1 year 1 week ago #27490

DaibloTitle

Diablo 3 presents a challenge, both in a literal sense of the game and in the sense of fans looking to continue their dungeon-crawling addiction. I’ve written and rewritten this review four times, each focused on disappointments, surprises, and amazements that have greeted me with nearly every battle. I’ve settled on scores ranging from mediocre 5’s to amazing 8’s, each of them rationalized and earned. So why does Diablo 3 present such a range of emotions from a veteran game reviewer who’s so familiar with the franchise?

As a game, Diablo 3 is wonderful. It meets every gamer’s needs: an interesting story, wonderful visuals, and deep gameplay. It gives players the familiar experience of leveling a character -- this time to a current maximum of 60 -- and more importantly, the thrill of finding some amazing loot.

Too high a score for the points you brought up.

A five at best - all things considered.

Blizzard took ten years to hack & slash away much of the quality of the series. A shameful product from a once proud company.

That's where I had it, honestly Doubter. And I was able to rationalize the score. But what I couldn't do is rationalize why I've put nearly 90 hours into it.

I can't stop playing because it's a good game. It's just different than what I wanted (expected?). I play more solo now because of that. If you're looking for that same Diablo style, I'm thinking Torchlight 2 will be it, based on my time playing that title.

They'll get my props when they release my Necromancer class.

It's not Diablo if I don't have 50 skeletons swarming around my character.

Also, Sm1tty, did you know there is a (legit) way to map any skill to the skill bar?

I know there's a way to change skill selection slots. For instance, you can change the key #4 skill and put it on the left click instead -- is that what you mean?

I'm disappointed you couldn't work Diab-BLOWS into the title. :D

I tried diablo2, but could not get into it, but I was fully engaged in mmos. So diablo 3 is a very new experience to me.

Everything about the game is beautiful. The sounds, voice acting, graphics, effects all present a great package.

Playing games where the hero fights swarms and hordes of monsters and then has to climb over a mountain of loot to get to the next room doesn't really appeal to me. Yet the game still appeals to me. It is enough fun to play alone, but much more fun to play with a group of friends. All of which are diablo 2 vets, so I'm always lagging behind.

I'm not sure if all, some or none of the maps are pregenerated, but exploring around them appeals to my desire adventure. The small special little encounters that are sprinkled around are a lot of fun and the bigger fights can be challenging.

I just entered the second act and difficulty has picked up. Picking and chosing skills with the limited ruins I have can make a difference depending on where I am, but the old system sounds fun, but at the same time sounds like something I wouldn't have enjoyed for long.

Few things piss me off like the required internet connection with D3, but after beating the game on normal lastnight...wow. Great game.

I HATE that you need an internet connection to even play single player. HATE that. But, gameplay really shines in the face of Blizzard's pure stupidity. I can't wait to play through again on Nightmare mode.
