Snippet -

Right now, many Star Wars fans are feeling incredibly conflicted about the end of the original Expanded Universe. I'll even admit to being one of them, not because I'm against the prospect of reboots, but because there's a wealth of quality material there that might get swept under the rug. That's why the first EU stories Lucasfilm produces will be crucial; they'll either refute or confirm the fears of die-hard fans while acting as an introduction to the upcoming Episode VII. On that note, Lucasfilm has revealed the first four novels that will make up Star Wars new canon. Starting with a prequel to the Rebels TV series, we'll also get tales of Sith Lords, Luke Skywalker as a newly-minted Jedi, and the origins of Grand Moff Tarkin.

The author got one thing wrong.. the new novels aren't considered EU. They're considered CANON.

The Expanded Universe died. It's all a what-if that future authors and filmmakers can pull from as they wish, or not.

So calling the new stuff EU is misleading.

So, if I am understanding this correctly, we may have just as many future books coming out at the same rapid pace as in the past, but these books will be more "official" than in the past?

If that is true, then I am OK with this. If, however, they are clamping down on authors writing stories in the Star Wars Universe unless given the idea by LucasFilms, then I am not OK with that and it will have a chilling effect on creativity.

Right, I get that. But does that mean all future ideas have to come from LucasFilms, then Tim Zahn can write about that? Or is it just that anything Tim Zahn writes from now on is canon?

Disney/Lucasfilm has a whole department to make it work in canon, so I would figure that wherever the ideas come from, they will have to be cleared through those channels.

I highly doubt it will be dictated from on high. But it will all be cleared from on high for canon.

If they hire Zahn to write something, it will be canon now.

Sounds good to me. DO you see any down-sides to this, Shayde?

While there were a lot of novels that I really liked that are now "alternate history", I'm fine with knowing that anything new is really canonical.

Just hope they keep the quality up.

While I am fearful we'll never get to see Mara, the Solo twins, Anakin Solo, Ben Skywalker etc on the big screen... I am glad, that at least until further notice, we can assume Chewbacca is alive again.
